Yell.com recently did a study that shows that there are on average more than 18 jobs for moms who start their own business in a given week.

The roles that mothers play throughout the week are:  gardener/DIY expert, personnel manager/trainer, designer, internet expert, event coordinator, chauffeur, marketing/PR manager, counsellor, customer relations manager, teacher/homework support, provisions shopper, salesperson, PA/receptionist, launderer, accountant/finance director/bookkeeper, cleaner, nanny/nurse/babysitter and cook.

The company did the study to commemorate the 'Inspirational Business Mum of the Year' category at the 2008 Prowess Awards, which they sponsored.

Also interesting is what they have to say about the role of the Internet in their businesses:

More than half of the 2,000 business mothers surveyed said they could not do without the internet for the freedom and flexibility to work around family commitments.

More than a quarter log on to work after 5pm and 59% of those work between 9pm and midnight.

Nearly a third of businesses formed by mothers are completely internet-based. Helen Stevenson, chief marketing officer at Yell, said: 'It's interesting to see how much the internet is helping mothers to release their ambitions.'

Are there any other jobs for moms that you perform in a given week?

We all know that decent jobs for moms are difficult to track down, but this year many of you are determined to do just that.

WorkingMums.co.uk did a poll to see how many mothers are planning on looking for a position in the new year. 83% of the women polled said that they would be looking for work in 2008.

To me this tells two things: The first is that despite the challenges that many face, many moms are determined to give it a go this year. The second is, what are the other 17% doing responding to polls on a job website if they aren’t looking for work?

Are you planning on looking for something in 2008?  What kinds of jobs for moms are you finding out there? (I'll post on that soon).

Having jobs for moms at home sounds like an ideal situation, but there are definitely some things that are required in order to make the situation work.

The first thing you need is time.  You have to be able to block off enough time each day to do your assigned shift or to complete the tasks that need to be completed.  This might be difficult if you have small kids at home, so there may be short periods where you need a babysitter or daycare.   Remember that if your position is talking to customers, you can't have kids screaming in the background.

Most of the time (depending on the job of course), you'll need to have a computer, a good Internet connection (no dialup!), a dedicated phone line, and perhaps other equipment like a fax machine or printer.

If you have a customer service position, you might need experience dealing with clients, and of course will probably need good typing skills.  Good phone manners and a pleasant voice goes without saying too.

There are some great ideas here for the different kinds of jobs there are.

Have you encountered any other requirements that home-based jobs for moms might have?
